The page follows a guard entering a high-security containment facility, where members of “The Rejected” are imprisoned—genetically altered or enhanced individuals cast out by the New Vatican regime. Ian Bertram’s obsessive linework and layered architecture are on full display here, building to a haunting final panel that reveals a massive chamber holding the Rejected in individual observation cells. The first four panels—unpublished—offer a fascinating glimpse into the book’s creative development and pacing before final editorial changes.
